I have a 1938 unstyled G....been in the family since the 40's ....restoring it and it had round spoke wheels front and back....rear are 36 inch wheels....about a third is ground rotted....found a supplier in the Green magazine who sold me two sections of a 36 inch rim....outside to outside is 10 inches on mine and on the repair parts I bought....however the spokes don't line up...on my old wheel from center to center of the spokes are 5 and three-fourths inches....and on the replacement rims the center of the holes are 5 inches apart....can anyone help me.....were there more than one manufacturer of these wheels....did the G in 1938 come out with 36 inch wheels and what should I do here....thanks

Ray, the F-H wheels will have F-H cast on the hub. If you look through photos, the hub is more massive, barrel shaped than the JD hub. The spokes will look practically the same, I didn't realize there was a spacing difference. My 1942 B has the JD wheels on it that I found came out in 1938, somebody put them on before my father bought it in 1949. When somebody wanted to get rubber tires on their tractor back then, they'd use whatever fit. Could a good welding shop use the pieces you have? or is the ridge around the spoke opening critical? john

As I understand it, there were at least two manufacturers of round spokes. JD made their own in house, and they bought round spoke wheels from French & Hecht (i.e. F&H Round Spokes). F&H made spokes for IHC and AC as well.

However, I thought F&H had reached the end of their run by about 1936. Perhaps your D has JD wheels on it and you obtained replacement rims for F&H wheels.

There should be a casting number on the hub. if the wheels were made by JD, the casting number will have JD next to it. I have never seen the number on F&Hs, but I would assume they have the company name or initials somewhere.

Good luck.
