What is the rated PTO HP of a 4010 Gas?
I have found one offered for $4750 but haven't looked at it yet. What weak points should I be on the look out for?

I am looking for an affordable machine to do a little haying and some spreading. Would that be a good machine for me or should I stay away from the '10 series and find a 4020?

There's nothing wrong with the 4010. with the Gas tractor just be aware that they sometimes have personalities all their own, and be prepaired to be a patient mechanic, because it's not a matter of just air and fuel, it's also ignition, and carbourators that will sometimes give you fits plugs that will foul, poor gas. Nothing I hate more than a sputty tractor when you are trying to get something done. However after some work, and at 4700 dollars, I'd bet you'll be buying a tractor that needs some, you'll have a nice old tractor that will do the job, and have alittle collectors value someday. Alittle haying and spreading won't hurt the 4010 they have about 80-85 horse at the PTO. just be prepaired to use about 2.5 gallons of gas an hour at about $1.55 a gallon for your haying. Good Luck. Rob,
Do you have a marvel Schwebler, or Zenith Carb on your 4020. I've heard alot of people say that the Marvel schwebler Carb tractors seem to use more feul. My 66 4020 has a Zenith carb, Electronic Ignition, and I fixed the choke flap to stay all the way open. Mine had a tendencey to suck almost halfway shut which made it run rich, until I replaced the week choke cable. The 2.5 gallons an hour is an average of when I was doing the little 40 acre spot of hay on the family farm. it used more when mowing and baling, but I also would put the thing in 7th, and let it idle around the fields while tedding, and raking, and I used less. Also I square bale with mine, and I'm sure a round baler would keep the govenor open alot more. I love my old gas 4020 I'll never change it, but I still feel that in a dead pull on something like a heavy ensalage wagon on an up hill pull, the diesel model 4020's pull just alittle harder. No replacement for displacement. I also feel that they are easier on fuel consumption. Still a 4010 or early 4020 gas are good hay makers, and are fun to operate. take it easy, Greg H.

I have a Schwebler carb on mine, I put a new one on it when I worked for Deere.Mine doesent run rich, Just a fuel sucking hog.Back 25 yrs ago when I got the old gal I could afford to farm with it, And this is the tractor that got me started. It has been a real work horse and still is. You have never lived until you moldboard plow at night with a big gas tractor, The cherry red manifold and muffler are a site to see. I used to shut the lights so it would stand out in the field on a dark night, Always drew a lot of attention..... Rob

I have a Gas 4010 that never would start or run right until I put electronic ignition in it. Now it starts easily, even in the cold and runs like it should. It dynos 88 HP at the PTO. If you want more info on the ignition kits feel free to email me. They aren`t expensive and work very well.It made a good usable tractor out of mine. Scott [email protected]
