Carbon buildup question

Have the head off of my 50 to do an emergency manifold replacement and notice that my cyinders are each in very different condition. One side looks great but the other is full of carbon and the top of the piston is scarred and nasty. What is the likely cause of this? Should I worry? This is a field repair, we need the tractor back in service asap, and I really dont want to get into a total rebuild right now if I can avoid it. Have had some blow by from the vent tube but it's a good runner and does not use much oil.

If it has aluminum pistons in it it may be a broken ring and some pieces may have gotten up in the top, my 730 did the same thing a few years back (it also was knocking when the piston finished burnin a thumb size hole in itself, luckily my dad was standing right next to it when it let go and just reached up and shut it off). Don't know if it could/would scar a steel piston though. Also sometimes the screws that hold the butterflies in the carb can come loose and make it past the valves. It can/will hang in the piston and can scar it up too. Had this happen to the 730 also.

In the short run, I would just clean her up and stick her back together since you need to use it quickly, but then when you get time, I would be taking a good look at having that carb cleaned and checked since maybe that one cylinder is running a tad rich. Does each side have about equal compression??? Thats a good way to narrow the problem down for ring and valve type problenms versus carb problems. Just to be safe, for no more than it costs now, I would install new plugs, cap and rotor, and wires just in case one side has a weak spark which could contribute to excess carbon build up. Ol John T
