Thanks to the good advice from John T and Clooney, I am confident that I've got my '37 B flywheel in the correct location with respect to the crankshaft. However, it now appears that the crankshaft gear and camshaft gear are not registered properly since the #1 exhaust valve does not start to open until the LH EXHAUST OPEN mark is at about the 1:00 position. If I remove the govenor and the left camshaft bearing will I be able to lift the camshaft gear enough for it to disengage from the crankshaft gear so that I can get the correct register? I sure hate to have to remove the reduction gear cover if there is some way to remesh the gears without removing that cover. Thanks.

John, I have never tried to do what you are sugesting on an old B but have done it on a 70. I guess it is worth a try though, if you can't get it that way you might be able to remove the L/H main bearing housing & by moving the crank & cam apart it might give you enough clearence. Before you go through all that it might pay to make sure the #1 exhaust valve is adjusted to .020" & re-check it, when the Lh Ex Opn lines up ( or within 1 inch of index mark) with the index mark the #1 exhaust valve should just be starting to open .000 lash. If there is a lot of cam wear on that old beast you might not be able to trust the index mark to line up properly (within 1" of index) You might want to see if the crank gear & cam gear timing marks are lined up (they are very hard to see though once assembled)
