My gear shifter has a screw on head or top to it... Is this original or no?

Thanks,

Karl

The B never came with a knob. The knob was added when they made the 50 tractors. The original B shift lever (one part number) was subbed over to the model 50 shift lever with the knob (two part numbers, one for lever, other for knob). If you go to your Deere dealer today (or back in 1953)and order the original B shift lever, you will receive the shift lever made for the model 50 knob. The knob has to be ordered by its own part number. My new PC-330 parts catalog shows the sub numbers (which is the same as for Model 50). I recently changed my B over to the lever with the knob because it sure makes it a lot easier to shift rather than that straight stub sticking up. (Plus, my old lever was bent inside the trans and did not help the matter either).

Some farmers replaced the shifter on "B"s with a "50" shifter, if it has a screw-on shifter knob, its from a "50".

Once again Stan you are the man. I've got a 51 B no screw on top and never even heard of one on a Lettered JD!!

Karl:
I have a 1950 "B" that also has a screw on knob for the shifter.. I have often wondered the same about originality.. Thanks for the question and maybe someone can give us the correct answer.

You might want to read the two prior posts on this subject. I also looked in my Parts Catalog (PC330) to see what is shown there - no knob on the top of the shifter on the Model B's.

I've got a 51 "B" and a 45 "A". No "top" on shifter. Never seen one on a lettered tractor.

My '41 B does not have a screw-on top on it. Our '49 A did not have. Our '52 B did not have. An old brochure from 1947 does not show such an item on either the A or B.

In a nutshell, I surely don't think it's original.
Maybe it's from a Model 50, but I don't know if they would be interchangeable.
