440I Temp goes up after shut down

This may seem pretty basic... I just gutted the head on my 440I(gas) along with a new 160 t-stat after a blown headgasket. Now I notice that when I shut down the 'ol gal, the temp goes from about 165-170 to about 200 (and change). Is this built up head in the water jacket? Anything I need to be worried about? I never noticed it before. Thanks again for all your help.... Charlie

when the engine is running the water pump is supplying cool water to the engine.when you shut it off the water will only move by thermo-syphoning.and the water gets hotter because it either stays in the engine longer or stops moving completely.it is normal for the temp to go up.

Thanks for helping me sleep easier! I thought thats what it might be but since I haven't been into a 2 banger in a while (rebuilding the head) and replacing the stat, I thought I might have done something wrong. By the way I have heard of thermo-syphoning, weren't very early cooling systems (pre water pump) this way? Isn't that a normal phenomenon when heated water hits cooler water? Just one more point to ponder on weekend "tactor days" thanks for your help

Charlie, this is verey normal in any runing, working, or recreational activeity. Right from working your JD all day to working on the little women in the evening"or when it works for you" . you can personaly notice the difference in tempature after the work or so call work is completed and you take a breath or two in the moment after the job is completed. besides all that yes it is very normal for the engins tempature to rise up to 25 % as to what was show at time of shut down You should maybe always cool your engin down befor you shut it down ,it may be the best time you spent you in your tractor $$$$$$$$$$ Rick

john deere used thermo-syphoning on tractors up in to the 50's.yes it was pre-water-pump.water pumps were required when they made radiators smaller and engines bigger yes it is normal, the hot water rises and is replaced by cooler water

Another reason they put water pumps on in the early '50s was the shortage of copper for radiator cores during the Korean War. Steel did not provide as much cooling as the copper.
