I winterized my 50 B a couple of weeks ago by draining the water, putting in two gallons of antifreeze and refilling the radiator. The wife decided she need the garden plowed so I hooked up the disk and just started when the old gal (the tractor - not the wife) threw a fan blade. You guessed where it went. I can get the radiator fixed without pulling it off the tractor but how do you get the fan off? I know it is held on with keepers but I can't get the fan to move to get them out. Does anyone have another fan for sale? The tractor is a 1950 B.

Jim. You need to compress the fan and spring assembly towards the pulley. This will allow you to move the Keeper towards the pulley, and remove the two fan retaining locks. That's easier said than done when the unit is still on the tractor. I had to really whack mine to loosen it all up, and it was off the tractor. You'll most likely have to use C clamps to compress the fan and spring assy, as the spring is pretty stiff. I've had real good results finding good used parts from deerehunters.com . I've also had good results posting in the classified ads upper left side of this site. Good Luck!

The fan/shaft assembly on my A had to come off the tractor before I could get the fan off. "Vice-Grip" style welding clamps (C-clamps) were mighty handy.

I don't think you will succeed in trying to get C clamps on the fan while it is still mounted to the tractor. I recently had my model 50 all apart in that area and I believe a late model B will be very similar. That spring is extremely heavy and under a lot of tension. I used a homemade clamp of 2 pieces of heavy square tubing and two 1/2 inch threaded rods over the whole unit and those pulled hard to get the spring compressed. This was done with the entire unit out of the tractor. (see crude sketch below)

I I N--I----- ----- ----- --I--N I I I fan assembly I I was in this area I I I N--I----- ----- ----- --I--N I I

The vertical I's represent the square tubing and the horizontal dashes represent the threaded rods with the N's of course the nuts on the rods.

(Wow, the sketch doesn't transfer correctly, the second capital I in each line, other than where the dashes are, should move to the right to be in a vertical line with the two I's in the dashed lines)
