Without any warning the brake pads fell apart and clogged the hydraulic pump destroying it too! There are absolutely no warning signs when this happens, it still feels like you have brakes. It cost $2600.00 to repair this. Any comments.

Did all or part of the lining material wear, flake or crumble off. Tractor used for field or loader work?
Anybody riding the brake pedal as a step? Surprisingly common occurance. What brands of oil and do you have any left to send for analisis?

Andy, did you by chance change or add some different hydraulic oil to your tractor recently? I used to be a service man at a John Deere dealer, and when a certain brand of aftermarket hydraulic oil was used and mixed with the John Deere Hy-Gard oil you could guarantee brake pad failure within a few days as it would dissolve the pads. Either separately was fine, but mixed was a definite no-no. Something to ponder. Mike

Or SAE 90 gear oil. I saw that happen a few times & it's instant death for brake pads.

We have sold many a 6000 series tractor and have never had a brake pad fail. There is a screen in the suck side line going to the hyd. pump plus hyd filters., So I dont understand how every thing found its way to the pump. How many hours are on this tractor?..... Rob

Re:6200 John Deere it has 4056 hours. The pad totally fell apart leaving only fine shavings. The serviceman said the only time he has seen this happen is when water gets into the hydraulic oil. No trace of water was found when it was drained. Why wasn't there some indication the pad was gone or was going?

Andy, I also have never seen the pads fall a part on these tractors. I know that hydraulic system like the back of my hand, but unfortunately there is no sensor in the 6000 series hydraulic system to indicate a loss in pressure, there is a sensor in the tranmission to indicate a loss in pressure there. (Both the hydrualic system and the transmissiong draw there oil from the same location, throught the sump screen in the differental housing.) Most of the time when the brakes fail, they clog up this sump screen and you have no more hydraulics, and you are forced to stop. I am guessing that you lost the Charge pump, as this is the first pump in line after the sump screen, and hopefully the main pump was OK, as there is a filter after the charge pump. I know the charge pump are not cheap, as I have one sitting on my desk off a 7000 series tractor, but this is a Very rare occurrence. Sorry to hear of your problems, and I hope that you are still happy with your Deere... Good luck

just a short question? jd is famous for its fix as fail program. did they ask you if you notice any brake drag. because some 6000 series tractors had problems with there brakes dragging causing excessive haeting which in turn could of led to premature failure.causing your other problems.
