JD400 Overheating/Timing

Hello,
I made an earlier post on the messageboard regarding timing, but I still have this same problem. I have looked all over for the timing mark and I can't seem to find it.

The reason I checked the timing in the first place is that the JD400 will cut grass for about 10 minutes, then start to have a different smell (similar to flooding), overheat and cut off. I would have to let it sit for about 20 minutes before it would start again (trying to start it before 20 minutes had passed gave us a backfire). After about 20 minutes, it would start up, run fine for about 10 minutes, and then cut off again.

First, I thought it could be the timing causing it to overheat. I marked the timing mark on the flywheel, as per the service manual, but could never find the timing mark. So I thought a key on the cam gear had sheared off, throwing the timing off. So I removed the motor, tore it down, and checked both gears, and they were fine. I reinstalled them, per service manual, and timed the governor, motor fired right up with no problem. I cannot find the timing mark, however. I have enlarged the hole, but alas, no timing mark. When you engage the mower deck, it does the same thing as before, mows for 10 minutes, and then quits.

I talked to a mechanic from a JD dealership, and he stated that if the gears were in line, and the governor was in line, then that's all you could do, and don't worry about the timing mark. I don't feel comfortable with this, however.

I've replaced the points, condenser, coil, plug wires, plugs, and the air filter.

What else can I do?

Thanks in advance.
