Believe it or not, my dad and I used a 5/16 plow on our JD 720 for a year on some of the hilliest and rocky land in Pennsylvania. The 720 would pull mostly in third gear. Only rode a wheelie once when we hooked a locust root. Although we did sink it up to the axle once. Had to let it sit a week then it came right out. Just thought I would share an experience. Also the JD can Pull a Full stacked wagon load of hay up a pretty steep hill on our farm. By the top, it thump-thumps pretty loud and slow. wish they still made those two-cylinders.

it does these old tractors good to go out and do something once in awhile to clean the carbon out of them ,the 720 just feed the live stock and never gets realie gets worked ,the first round with the plow on it put out some awful black and gray smoke the it cleared up to just a light black ,it is running a lot better now .and as far as bring the frount up it would take a lot with the loader on it.

Maybe OK to experiment but continous operation past 80% load was not intended by design. Engine RPM is supposed to be full rated govenered RPM with a reserve power for hills and tough spots. Continous lugging reduces fuel efficiency and drive train life. Unless overballasted the worst danger here is loss of steering control or tip back. Must be in light soil as our 70D ballasted to 9700 lbs with 4x14's in clay soil could be made to lift the front or spin out in 1st or stall in 2nd.

Agree with all you say. Must however say that comparing a 70D to a 720D or 730D is like comparing spark plugs to rubber stoppers. From the crankshaft back they're altogether different animals. The 20 & 30's had much slower transmissions. I may be wrong but I think the 730 in 5th is still slower than the 70 in 4th. Have often wondered if I could transplant a 720's gear train into my 70's case. The engineers eliminated the big step in speed between 3 & 4 that the 70 had. All good machines but there are a lot of differences.

G Taylor Why were they so fast?

Hm yes forgot to mention the racing tractor 70 models were faster in 1st than a 720/730 regular trans .Have the standard wheatland model with shorter 18.4x30 tires. Imagine those extra tall FireStone Traction Field and Road 18.4x38's on a row crop.Still had to lift the plow on some hills in 1st gear or run out of power. Dyno'ed at 53 HP before the rebuild. It even has the improved 720 head with bigger valves as well. Why did Deere make 1st so fast in G's & 70's?
And if late for supper you could also drive home in great haste using reverse on a 60 or 70.

Operator's manual for my 70D says speeds with 12-38 tires (and just a little bit slower for 15-30):
1st gear: 2.5 mph
2nd: 3.5
3rd: 4.5
4th: 6.5
5th: 8.75
6th: 12.5
Reverse: 3.25.

I'm still in the rebuilding stages (so have not driven it) but the trans does show a lot of wear on 1st and 2nd compared to the other gears.

Another thought: the Nebraska Test #528 shows the engine torque (at the belt pulley) is actually much larger at idle speed through 900 rpm, 310+ ft lb than at rated speed (1123 rpm = 259.4 ft lb). Torque curve drops off fast above 1000 rpm. So would it be harmful to run at (say) 800 rpm if 1000-1100 is too fast in a given gear?

Opinions/discussion welcome.

From what I've read the two cylinders were not a shift up ,idle back to peak torque system for light to modest loads . This was a selling point for the New Generation. They were not intended for use loaded to 110% and lugged down to 80% rated RPM. For longitivity and fuel effiency two cylinders were intended to idle only for initial warmup and cooldown prior to shutdown. Otherwise operate at rated RPM and 80% load.

I used to run a 14 FT. swather for a guy and pulled it with a 966. One year the 966 broke down and we pulled it for a few days with his 730. They are workhorses.
