We've got a 4 wheel drive 4020 on our farm. I believe the 4020 was modified by "Elwood Manufacturing" as a prototype for a mechanical four wheel drive aftermarket add-on. I have a limited amount of paperwork regarding this. My question is how common were these modified 4020's? I've only heard of one other one like it. It's quite a mammoth front axle. I'd love to here from anyone who has any info or insight on our tractor. I'd be happy to e-mail a picture to anyone who is interested.

Thanks for the pictures.Looks like areal worker. I see outrigger struts from the tractor to the housing, but howw is the housing attached to the frame? I see that it's hooked to a haybine, does it turn short enough for this work? Interesting steering rod system.

Glad you like the pictures. It's a mean tractor. The housing is attached to the frame by a pivot pin that goes through the differential housing and into a plate fore and aft of the diff. Makes a simple hinge. There are some heavy bumpstop plates on the side to limit movement. It doesn't turn real well, we put it on the haybine because we were using the other tractors for other work. The steering rod has a few non-JD parts. It's getting worn and we made a few field repairs to it. It's a heavy machine. The Elwood paperwork I have says the front axle adds 1500 lbs. to the tractor plus the weight of the other parts. When we got it it also had calcium in the front tires! I added another picture, should be on the link below. It shows the mount a little better. It also shows that the tractor needs a little camber adjustment. Some other parts are getting worn and the whole thing needs a rebuild. Glad you enjoyed the pictures.

One last Question. How did they get the power out of the rearend? Do the wheels(front/rear) move at the same speed in all gears?

The power comes from a front output on the tranny housing(?) into the driveshaft. That output may have been an factory option for front or belly mounted implements. Any thoughts? The front tires move at exactly the same speed as the rears, no lead. This was supposedly to keep tire wear down and efficency up.

The shaft coming out the front is just a PTO,I think. I don't think you could syncronize gearspeed that way. Someone out there must know if the transmission housing was modified. I have seen a picture of a factory 4620 with front gear drive.

Is the front end a mechanical or a hydraulic powered unit? I have seen the hydraulic ones, but not a mechanical one.

It's a mechanical four wheel drive. I will post pictures in a day or two.
