3 point hitch dimensions needed

I have a three point hitch question.

I have a Cat.II hitch on my '70' (JD 801), and a Cat.I on my 855. Since I have all Cat.I implements (so far), they droop and don't fit well on the '70'. For example, the disc won't really go down as far as it should because I run out of down travel. Same for the scraper box, and the potato plow.

So, I'm thinking of building an adapter that would go from Cat.II tractor to Cat.I implements. I envision that it would look like a quik-hitch, but fit the Cat.II on the '70', but have implement attach points set for Cat.I.

I need to know what the attach point dimensions would be from the implement point of view. I have the three points figired, but need to know how far from the "ground" datum.

Thanks!

Frank,
This is probably of no use to you by now, but some years ago I wanted the dimensions of all the CATs of three point hitches. I wrote to my alma mater's (North Dakota State University) agricultural engineering dept and asked for these dimensions and they sent me photo copies of some standardized specs with everything I wanted. If you would still want to know more specifics you could probably ask your local agricultural college for the info. I assume every state must have at least one college or university that has an ag eng dept. (if I had any idea of where my copies are I could email them, but I'd be looking a LONG TIME to try to find them here!)

Thanks Ron.

In fact someone was kind enough to send me a copy of ASAE S217.12 "Three-Point Free-Link Attachment for Hitching Implements to Agricutural Wheel Tractors" specification, and I am chewing through that right now.

Ron:

There are some limited specs provided right here on YTMag with an additional article:

I think you are making this problem more complex to solve that it is. JD solved this problem, unique to certain implements on a 70, with Lift Link Extensions(P2893B). While I've never physically seen one I have pictures of them. These lift link extensions are shown in a few of the JD Operators Manuals for the Disk Harrows - C & KBY; and the 246,247,446 & 447 Planters. They look like they might add about 3" to 4" to the length of the Lift Links so that your draft arms will drop an equal amount further down, resulting in a solution to your problem.

If I were to fabricate these I would take a piece of steel flat bar stock, the same thickness as the bracket on the draft arm of the right length and then drill a hole in the top end to mate with the Lift Link Fork and then on the bottom weld two more pieces of this same steel bar stock on the outside edges of the piece long enough to create another fork compatible with the bracket that it bolts to on the draft arm. Essentially that is what JD did, except they cast the part.

If you don't have a picture of this Lift Link extension, I can send one to you.

Hope this helps.

Dean:

Got the pictures just fine. That explains a lot. I'll make some measurements and see how much I could drop the arms with extensions. I hope the center link is still long enough. Perhaps that will need an extension, too.

I had thought of making two spee ball arms that would slide in and replace the original ones, but that would be a lot of work.

Thanks again,

Frank

Frank:

JD did not change the Upper Links when they used the Lift Link Extensions so you may ok. The implement isn't pushed away from the tractor, just the draft arms will be lower. The geometry of the way the lift links connect to your 801 Bell Housings on the axle probably will have to shortened rather than lenghthened. Notice the Upper Links are at an angle downward from the top link connection point so as you lower the bottom two connection points the Lift Links will be longer because the angle downward will be less. That is why you might even have adjust them to make them shorter.

I would think you would want to lock out the Bell Housing from doing it's thing with the implements you are using. That moves the axle end of the Lift links closer to the axle as well.

PS: There are two different types of Upper Links assemblies used. If your 801 is an upgraded version of what was originally a 800 or 800a the Lift links will have 4 1/4" adjusting straps. If it originally was a 801 the adjusting straps will be 6 1/4" long. JD changed the amount of threads on each shaft and then used different forks on the ends. The overall adjustment range didn't change significantly.

Hope this helps.
