The JD 40 Starts and runs fine IF the gas was off prior to start or I bleed the carb a little. It appears that someone has been in there recently before I bought it. Gas is leaking out the side next to the engine and is wet even when running. Does that sound like a float problem or?? Thanks, MN Bob

I just rebuilt the engine in my JD 40 only to discover the same problem you are having. I didn't open the carb because I had put a gasket kit into it the year before. Thought there couldn't possibly be anything wrong with it. Left me stranded half way down the line at the local tractor pull when it got starved for gas. I opened it up to find that the float was crushed and leaking. I must have got some water into the fuel bowl that froze and crushed and punctured the float. It's not a terrible job to do, look the carb over and see how it's attached. Remove the carb and tear into it. Once you open it you will almost undoubtedly need a carb kit($40 from JD). It has all the gaskets you should need. The float is a seperate item. If you haven't done so lately it's probably a good idea to put the whole kit in. If it looks good or you done want to spend the $40 you might be able to get away with just the carb to manifold gasket and the carb bottom to carb top gasket plus any other parts you need. You may also have a problem with the needle seating in the seat. A new needle comes it the kit. Make sure the seat is clean. Good luck.
