I would like to know if any one knows how to convert my old 24 start 4020 to 12volt system.
I know you have to chage the starter and put in 12 delco alt. But what about in the dash and what about that old regulator ,what wires to cut, what ones do you join
pleas help

My 4020 is still 24 volt. It works well. I wouldn't change it. Good batteries, good starter, good regulator and everything will work fine and that's basically what you'll need on any system. There are several around that have been converted though. It's up to you. Good luck.

A properly maintained 24V system is worth keeping for collectability. Why not repair the origional system?

Rick; No answer, but I would like to know why you want to change it over? I have been looking at an electric start 720D with the 24V system. Is there problems? Thanks, MN Bob

No problems that I know of other than they're misunderstood. If maintained they work very well. My nephew wanted to change his 4020 to 12v. I asked him WHY? His buddies told him they were better than the 24 volt systems. Turns out they just found them easier to jump start 'cause the 24 volt confused them. I asked him when he last had to jump his 4020. Don't remember. That 720's been starting for along time with that 24 volt system. I'd keep it 24 volt starting.

Been reading your comments about 24 volt systems and find it very informative. But my problem is about a 10 wheel diesel dump truck. A 1960 white it has 4 6 volt batteries, a large solenoid mounted on the fender near the battery box,a solenoid on the starter, two battery cables come from the large solenoid, one cable comes from a grounded spot on the back of the motor, and one cable comes from the starter and two jumper cables on outside ends,+to-.Need diagram, jump info

I can't remember the specific wiring on a 4020, but first, you have to rewire the batteries from series to parallel. Both,+ poles connected to the main starter terminal, both - grounded. The delco alt is internally regulated, so you can remove the old regulator. The lights, gages, etc., are 12 volt, so you can wire them as on any 12 volt system. Hope this helps get you started.

first of all it isn`t that bad of a conversion your local deere dealer has a kit to do the conversion complete with starter, alternator and instructions deere also offers a 24v alternator kit so you can keep the starter if it`s still good maybe you can talk to one of your local techs
and get one of the instruction booklets to guide you through
