i recently purchased a 1957, j.d. 420-w. it is an older restoration. the tractor is painted with yellow accent on the hood and down the sides of the grill. the nose is not drilled for an emblem. my operators manual depicts the tractor as an all green(except wheels)tractor, with the name "john deere" on the nose. my service manual, dated(2-57), depicts the tractor as having yellow accents on the hood and grill sides and a nose emblem. there is a 1957 420-t, on e-bay,that looks to be original, and is all green and has a nose emblem. any input will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

thanks ToddT,
now i know it's a green/yellow hood. a couple of other things i have noticed, there aren't any holes to mount the nose emblem, and there are two holes(top and bottom) in the hood sides closest to the dash, but only one mounting screw at the bottom leaving the top hole open.

My parts book says that top hole is for a hood bumper, which I infer is a small rubber plug.

Harry, 420's were built from 1956 to 1958. There were three distinct versions. Generally these can be divided into those from roughly 1956, painted all green like the 40's, with a straight vertical sterring wheel. 1957 - color scheme changed to include the yellow on the hood and yellow seats. 1958 - still with yellow paint scheme and now with a slanted steering wheel.

Hope this helps.
