B governor shaft snaps

I have a 1936 unstyled "b" Deere and the governor shaft snapped clean in two. It happened while the tractor was running and miraculously caused no damage (other than to the shaft). It snapped about midwat through and the fan and the magneto quit turning. There is plenty of oil going to the shaft and all bearings were nice, tight and oiled. The break happened right at the snap ring groove. One thing though, I noticed that the collar on which the governor weights run had several marks on it as if the forks on the weights had a problem sliding. Any help is appreciated. I just finished painting the tactor and doing everything else, did I screw up?!

Thanks, Brendan

I believe that almost the same thing happened to my brother and I last night. We had our father's 1938 A running when it just quit. We haven't had a chance to look into it much further, but the Mag isn't turning and the fan shaft doesn't spin either. Our shaft appears to be solid yet, but it does not spin with the gear. Is there a keyway that drives the shaft from the gear? Our bearing is a little sloppy and we thought that maybe that that may have snapped. My brother is more mechanically inclined and worded than myself, but any information may be helpful and certainly appreciated. Thanks in Advance Tim
