Just purchased a 53 JD 60 (Not Running) It appears to have a after market Alternater. My question is How do I tell if this has been changed from Positive ground to Negative Ground, It did not have a battery in it when I got it.

I have an Allis Chalmers G, which I converted to 12 volt alternator yesterday. It should be negative ground. I don't see why soomeone put an alternator on it because ALL John Deere 60s came from the factory with 12 volt generators.

John, I agree with the clooney man, mainly because unless the alternator is one of the few and expensive positive ground models (I hear are available never seen one have you clooney???) its been converted to negative ground because thats the only way all them alternators work. If shes negative as we suspect, install the battery negative ground and be sure the coil - goes to the distributor and coil + gets power from the switch. When reversed, any ammeter leads also have to be reversed to make it read correctly. John T

John T, nope never seen a 12v pos gound alternator but like you have heard of them being offered in the last few months. I have seen a 24 volt pos ground alternator though & looked real expensive!!!!!

John, if it has an alternator there is a real good chance it is negitive ground. The only way to tell for sure though is to see if there is any markings on the alternator & chase that information back to the company that built the aletrnator. If it had a "top post" batery in it you might be able to look at the cables to see which cable was on the big post & which was on the small post. Even looking at the coil won't help as you don't know if it was changed & wired correctly or not. If there are any markings on the alternator post them & see if anybody recognizes the alternator. If there aren't any markings just assume it is negitive ground as there is about a 99% chance it is.
