I have a JD420c,the left steering clutch is slipping under load.I pulled the steering clutchs, the clutches look worn . Their are a total of 13 plates 6 of the steel plates that lock into the drum and 7 floating plates.I got a price on a new set from john deere, very expensive. My question is can i just clean up the steel plates and reuse them, an just buy the floating plates, and is there any were else to purchase new or used(if possible)ones.Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks O.V.E.

I had the same experience. Cleaning the plates did not work, and after taking the final drives apart twice I decided that the cost of the plates was justified.

I bought a few used steel steering clutch plates for my 420C from Schaefer's Enterprises of Wolf Lake, Illinois. Their number is 618-833-5498. The plates actually came from a 40C, but they interchanged exactly. This was several years ago - they might not have any now. The old timers advised me to add an extra steel plate or two in each clutch pack to tighten them up.
