JD B Help with Clutch

Need your help with the clutch on my 1950 JD "B" -Serial#270162. This is difficult to describe but here goes!

I purchased a new bronze collar (B172R) which pivots on the clutch fork. The new collar has a bronze projection on each end of the collar that accepts the pivot cap screw. The projections are rectangular shaped - maybe 3/16" thick, 3/8" long and 3/8" high. When installed in the operating sleeve of the clutch, the projections are toward the main case.

Note that the old collar looks as if it had projections also, but it appears as if they had been removed with a grinder.

A friend said he thought the part number did not change but the projections were added later to serve some sort of purpose on a later "B" or "50." He thinks the projections will not be a problem when the clutch and flywheel are adjusted.

In any case, when the collar is installed into the proper slot in the operating sleeve, the projections come in contact with the pulley gear when the operating sleeve moves over against the snap ring.

I have the pulley on the crank and have installed all of the clutch parts but have not tightened the three adjusting nuts. When I install the clutch fork assembly (with the new collar) and engage the clutch, the projections hit the pulley gear. Since the clutch disks, etc. are not tight, I can easily rotate the pulley. When I do this, I can hear and feel the projections hitting the teeth of the pulley gear.

When all is adjusted and the operating sleeve is moved to the engaged position, the projections may not touch the pulley gear teeth. I just don't know.

Any thoughts, suggestions, or opinions?? Should I grind the projections off? Or will they not come in contact with the pulley gear after everything is adjusted?

I ran into the same siuation when installing a new collar on our 44 B. The projections actually engaged the first reduction gear when the clutch was properly adjusted and released. This would not be a good thing when the tractor is in motion. I was in the same position you are, reluctant to alter a part I just paid 100 dollars for. After thinking about it for days I cut them off with a hacksaw. We've run the tractor hard all summer with no problems. Good luck from Maine

Ken, I believe those projections you are talking about are used on the 520 as part of a pulley movement/ brake enhancment change. On the late 520 there were 2 bolts in the case (between the clutch fork & case) that could be adjusted to limit the pulley movement towards the case, they contacted little bosses on the bronze collar. The part number you listed is different than the number used on the 520 so I don't know if J.D. was trying to use one bronze casting for both the B & 520 or you got a 520 collar or there is some other reason those bosses are on there. I have seen one other post with the same complaint as you have but I don't remember which site, it could have been Rummys. You might want to run a site serch for clutch, operating sleeve or clutch problem & see what turns up. You might want to adjust the clutch, then paint those bosses white, then install the pivot & collar, then operate the clutch with the engine running, then pull the collar & see if there is contact, if none don't worry, if contact is seen then grind to clear or research farther. Post your findings so we all can learn about this finding.
