The tranny in my 64 3020 synchro range is locking up in high range .I had new synchro clutch packs and internal shifters (drums) installed about 40 engine hours ago. When the tractor is traveling in any high range gear, the tractor wheels will come to a sudden stop,at thispoint the console shift lever will be stuck in gear.I disconnected the linkage rods andput the range shifter in tow mode. The tractor was able to be towed but thetranny was still locked up.Upon removing the top trans cover ,I discovered theHIgh range shifter apparently stuck between gears. To free this up,I put pressure on the console shifter lever to try to shift back into neutral and at the same time tapped on the shifter drum till the top shaft went back into neutral.I separated the tractor ,had a technition friend remove the top shaft(and replace 7th gear with a now broken tooth).Reinstalled the top shaft inwhich everything else seemed OK.I put the tractor back together ,took it for a test drive in high range,100yards later locked up in high range again.I again freed the tranny and it works fine in all the low range gears, but Id really like to have all the gears work dependably.Any suggestions to remedy my problem?

Your LOW range pinion (smaller one)is seizing to the top shaft. When you shift to high, it's in 2 gears at once. When you're in low, it's just where it wants to be. You may have to split it again, look for sieze marks inside the low pinion. The usual cause of this is either towing without shifting to tow position or letting the tractor roll backwards in a forward gear. Don't let it lock up like that too many times or you'll be cutting the pinion off the shaft w/a torch. I've seen them welded so tight they won't come off w/a 30-ton press. HTH.

PI,That really sounds like what is going on in my tranny.Although I've never towed it before this problem,I do plead guilty of letting it roll backwards in a forward gear a few times. However the clutch was pushed in at the time, it never occured to me that this would cause transmission damage.Once I split the tractor and take out the top shaft, how do I correct the problem? Thanks much.Tommy

Tommy, when you get the shaft out, look at the area the low pinion runs on for gall marks-if not too bad, chuck the shaft in a lathe & polish the bad spot down. This will also show if the shaft is straight or not. If you cant get it smooth, you might have to replace the shaft. Same w/the gear, but you'll prob. have to replace the gear. When you assemble the shaft, put Lubriplate or some kind of lube inside the gears. A dry start could create the problem all over again. HTH, PI.

Tommy, sometimes this is an easy fix, but seems difficult. Most of the time the problem is up in the console. There are some disks that are shaft that the shifter is on. If they disks are missing, or broken the tran tends to get stuck in gears and lock up. Make sure that the linkage is all adjusted properly. I'll if I can look it up in the parts book sometime tomorrow.. Later.

Bryan, thanks for the input, but the discs and the internal shifters were recently replaced. There is another followup listed that really sounds like the real problem.Later Tommy
