I got the A out of the barn, started, on the trailer, and home today. It hadn't run in 4 years, but we pulled it about 100ft. and it popped right off. What a pretty sound. Now I have a few questions. The serial number tag is missing. Is there another way to tell the year of a JD? I know on IH the block is stamed with a serial number and there are casting codes. I know it's in the 40's. It is a duel fuel, straight frame rails, old style seat, long hood. The reasons I would like to know is one parts, and two curiosity. I need a manifold for it as the one on it is cracked rather badly. If anyone has one or could give me a part number by the description of the tractor so I can place a classified I would appreciate it. Thanks Bill {Antique Acres}

Bill, I have a 1945 A which matches the discription of your tractor. Is the starter mounted to a bracket on top of the crankcase cover (right under the battery). If so, most of your part numbers will start with A23XXR. I have a all fuel manifold on mine which is part #A2338R. I hope this helps a little. My guess is your tractor probably was made between 1943-1946. Larry

If it has the old style seat it should have cast frame rails, as when they went to the pressed steel frame in 1947 they also went to the batteries under the seat, does it have an enclosed starter? It sounds like somewhere between 41 and 47 to me with the loop drawbar and old style seat.

OK! Everybody quit confusing me. All this lingo is a lot different than my usual color of red stuff I know about. The side rails are straight, and are of the variety where you can remove the head without splitting the tarctor. The starter is open with the flywheel just like a handstart, but with a ring gear on it. It has the saddle switch on the starter with the short piece of metal you push with your foot. Not the big button with the spring. Thanks Bill {Antique Acres}

It is styled and it does have the pressed steel frame. I guess I should have explained a little better when I said straight frame rails. It does have John Deere on the axles. It also has a loop drawbar if that makes any difference and the 6 speed high/low transmission. Thanks Bill {Antique Acres}

Also it has John Deere stamped in the axles. When did they stop doing that? Thanks Bill {Antique Acres}
