I just installed the first reduction gear cover on the main case of my 1950 model B.

The manual calls for 1/2 quart of engine oil (crankcase) to be put in the bottom of the cover.

Clarification? The manual calls for engine oil in the 1st. reduction gear cover BUT another JD restorer said to put transmission oil in the cover. PLEASE CLARIFY. Since crankcase oil lubricates the main bearing and clutch in the upper part of the cover and there is a hole in the main case to return oil to the crankcase, it makes sense that one would use engine oil.

Question: What type of engine oil is recommended for these old Bs? 10-W-30, straight 30 wt. (if you can get it)or something else.

As always, your opinions will be appreciated.

The same oil that goes in your engine. These covers were later drilled and tapped for plugs and were serviced the same time as the engine. Doug in Tx
