I recently purchases a 1954 JD Model 70 (gas) and the owners manual recommends engine oil meeting Service MM for this tractor. What is the comparable current specification for engine oil since I can no longer buy Service MM spec oil? Should I be using a non-detergent oil?
Any info would be appreciated.

Why do folks think Arnold Palmer's tractor could not have survived without that trusted yellow bottle of oil!?! I feel as long as it has a detergent package, and is of the proper weight, and it is priced to suit you, then that is the oil to use. My "hotrod" Deere pullers run on a steady diet of WAL-MART Tech 2000 in the 10w-40 flavor. And at .74 cents/quart, it is a bargain for an engine that hold 12 qts.

Dont use non detegent oil in it. But basicly any of todays good brand-quality oils are better than what was around when the tractor was new. I would use an SAE 30 diesel type oil myself.

My neighbor used non detergent oil in his old As and Bs, and Penzoil 10W-40 oil in his "working" tractors. I'm not trying to knock Penzoil, but when he switched to Mobil 1330 SAE 30, his engines had far fewer problems.

Isn't it dangerous to use diesel oil in Gas engines ? I read this somewhere. I had to "unstuck" a lawn mower once which had just had an oil change. The only thing I could see wrong was that it appeared that diesel oil had been put in it.

Personally I would use a good name brand SAE 30 SJ. I like Amoco. A lot of folks really like the Cenex flavor.

I have a 56 70 and I have been using straight 30 weight detergent oil without any problems and good oil pressure even when hot.

I have a 1953 JD 70 Gas, and the owners manual actually recomends SAE 30 Oil. You can find that just about anywhere, but I've run lots of different oils, and never had any problems.

Now, Anybody know where I can find a flywheel for it? E-mail me personally if you know of any.

Thanks, Troy
