What has been happening to the 4020 market. Are prices where they were a few years ago? I am looking at a 1968 with 3500 hrs and excellent original paint. $8500.00 is the asking price.

I just bought my first 4020 today. A 1968 with 3600 original hrs. The faceplate looked original and the paint was original & shiny. It had a fuel filter that read last changed in 1992, just over 200 hrs ago on the tractor. I paid 9K for it but I think it will be my last 4020 that I purchase.

we are seeing the 4020 series off 3-4 thousand dollars but at every sale i see the jd brand is taking a beating from 1972 back here the a-b series is off 50% seems as though the market is flooded the 330s are off 4-5 thousand

No you cant tell about the tranny by wiggling the gear shift lever. The sloppiness you feel is the worn out bushings in the shift control itself.look on the left side of the tractor at the clutch arm, there is a slot in the arm with a adjusting bolt in the slot. If the bolt is at the front of the slot the clutch should be good,if at the back of the slot the clutch disc is worn out.behind the clutch housing, and inside of the clutch arm there is a grease fitting screwed into the main frame, this is where you grease the pto throw out bearing, check to see if it has been greased lately, most owners dont

The 4020 market is still holding strong. I have seen 4020s from $4000-$15000 range depending on the condition. If the hour meter is true and the 4020 looks in good shape $8500 is a reasonable price. One this to note the power shifts normally are a little more value when in good condition but they cost a lot of money to fix is some thing is wrong with them, so if the 4020 you are looking at is a power shift make sure it shifts smooth between gears and does not slip.

It is not a powershift. Can you tell with a syncrange if the Tranny is loose by moving the gear lever. Does this tell you anything if they feel sloppy? Anything else that I should look for? (like clutch adjustment) I am going to look at it a test ride it on Fri. The injectors are being gone thru, new rubber, new seat.

He said that he would put a Westondorf on it for an additional 4500. Is that a good loader and a good price?

Thanks

Westy, if that is the actual hours, in my area that would be a very good price. If the tractor has the original hour meter there will be a green zone and a red zone on the tachometer scale. If it is a replacement it likely will be solid white, or for sure it is a replacement if the numbers are "500, 1000, 1500," etc. Originals will be "5,10,15," etc. I am not partial to Westendorf loaders. They are a nice loader to put on and take off, but due to this fact they fit pretty loose and are hard on the tractor. I used to work in a John Deere dealership and it was a common practice to put side frames and side frame bolts on 4020's that had Westendorf loaders on them. Hardly ever did you do this on a John Deere-equipped loader tractor. Hope this helps. Mike

Around here it is more common for the John Deere loaders trash out more blocks ,bolts and side frames than any other loaders. The reason is you can't see the side frame to block bolt with the loaders on.
