I bought a 7 ft, JD sickle mower at auction last year and am pulling it with my JD-A, but I've broken three pitmans this summer. Is there an alignment issue I don't know about, or am I going too fast (too slow) etc.????? The last two broke by the flywheel.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am buying the pitmans instead of making them. Could the fact that the hydraulics not working have anything more to do with it? Since I'm only out on the farm on weekends, I'll check your ideas out. I bought 180 acres and rent out 160 in crops, and maintain about 20; shelterbelts, prairie hay and weeds for the most part, except for a nice, new farm pond that I'm stocking. All I need now is more rain.

You guys have been awfully helpful with my John Deere A problems earlier as well. I find this forum very useful.

If the knife is being held down too tight by improper adjusted hold down clips and wear plates, and/or the shims there at the head of the knife, that may contribute to your problem, but if its too tight one would think the spring that holds the pitmann to the knife ball head would cause the pitman to pop free of the knifes ball, which would also probably break the arm. The joint at the flywheel needs to be free to move front and back in addition to round and round can it ??? Another thing that can break them is too much play like a worn bushing or bearing or loose ball hold spring at the other end, either of which shocks the arm too much. You should be able to manually turn that flywheel and see if the knife reciprocates fairly freely and doesnt have slack at each end of the throw. John T

If all the parts are dull and you are in June grass or something that cuts really tuff it can do that too.

Are you making your own replacement parts?

If you are, you have to make sure that the points of the knife's sections are fully centered in the guards when the crank pin is to the right and left extremes of it's rotation. Section points should be centered between the guards when the crank pin is up and down.
