I am ready to install the First Reduction Gear Cover on my soon-to-be-restored 1950 model "B."

Would appreciate suggestions for type of gasket sealant to apply to gasket. As you know, the cover will contain some crankcase oil.

I use a good adhesive ,like 3m or jd weather strip adhesive with any gasket for two reasons one to hold it in place, two so that the gasket doesn't slip out of place during final torque. Black RTV silicon is great stuff but it doesn't hold the gasket in place. I use it when I can't get a gasket or to fill in pitted areas like on water pumps or exaust manifolds, but I still use glue on the opposite side of the gasket. Black RTV handles exaust temps, oil. and coolant well.

Hi Ken. There are good ideas here, and I have used these, too, with pretty good success. The best thing I have found for these gaskets, though, is to use 3M weatherstrip glue. Very often these gaskets have been on the shelf quite a while in their folded state and you need something that is a good "sticker" to hold the gasket to the cover. The weatherstrip glue works very well for this. Do not use silicone as odds are you won't be happy with the results (many are not oil resistant). Hope this helps. Mike

Ken, I have always used #1 permatex & never had any leaks even after years of use, I don't like silicone for a gasket like that because if it starts to leak at some time you can't just tighten it to stop the leak you must remove the cover & start over.

I've had exceptionally good luck with the JD black gasket sealer. It is like the old indian head shellac, coat gasket on both side. Comes with a brush on tip.
