Over the past few months my G was starting to pop and bang... So I checked the timing and it had advanced... The distributor had not moved.. (I have it marked) Set the time back to 0 (or so the marks lined up) and she runs much better.. but at wide open she still is a little eratic.. (My wide open is a little faster then it should be, but I have never had a problem before..) The distributor is run electronic ignition, with the matching flamethrower coil.. (It is a new coil) Do I have a weak spring?? (So that it is advancing it too far at idle, and there is nothing left at WOT???) How much force should be need to manually move the advance when the tractor is not running... I am going to remove my distributor off my 70 to see if this fixs the problem, but I will have to fix this distributor.
Thanks for any help..

JDGnut, you should check the ignition timing at fast idle (WOT). I think it should be 26*-30*. take a tape measure & measure the circumference of the flywheel in inches, then divide that measurement by 360 & that will give you the inches per degree, then multiply that number by 26, then use that number & measure from the TDC mark on the flywheel in the advanced direction & put a paint mark, then set the advanced timing to that mark using a timing light on # 1 plug wire. If the timing mark is jumping all over there is wear in the dist or governor or your ignition pick-up is not sensing correctly.

Clooney, thanks for the help. I measured out the degrees and marked it all out... and put the time light on her again.. I opened her up and it looks like it is getting full advance at about 900 rpms, so I think I have a weak spring. I did get her to idle down lower then what I timed it at and it retarded even more, past the mark... I just set it so when it is wide open she is closer to the 26 degree mark... This will get me by for this week, but I'll have to get it fixed... thanks for the help.. JDGnut
