Excuse me for asking dumb questions but I'm new at this. I just bought a 1953 Jd 60 (in Peices) and my question is this. Is this a Positive ground tractor? I am quite sure it is a 12 volt system but I also have a working 54 Jd 50 that is a positive ground system. Also, what is the Horse Power rating of both the 50 and the 60. Thanks I will stand by.

Hi John---thought I would put my two cents worth in on this neg. positive grd. deal. You ever hear of Murphy's Law (whatever will go wrong will go wrong) I have a few old John Deere's and I switch them to negative ground, because if you fool around with them long enough you'll have to jump start it at one time or the other, you can jump a vehicle with oposite grounding provided that they pyshicialy don't touch. Rather than take the chance of damaging the electric system on a modern vechicle I just switch polarity of batt.,the coil has to rotated it you have neg, grd. on battery have negative terminial on coil going to points,or if you have positive grd. on battery have positive going to points,it's very easyto do these new vechicles are a nightmare trying to striaghten out after a boo-boo on Ford trucks you can screw up the glow plug system,I'm seting here listing to Sarah Brightman (It's time to say goodbye) and rambling on. See you Gman

Hi John, all the two-cylinder tractors were positive ground. As for HP, the 50's were around 30 HP, and the 60's were around 40 HP!

While on the subject of Positive/negative ground I would apppreciate it if someone would educate me on this. Until I bought a 48 John Deere A I had never heard or Positive ground. Whats the purpose of this?

It is proven that a positive ground system is less subject to electrolysis. nearly all telephone power systems (48VDC)have had positive grounded systems for years.

I ask the original question and I also have a l954 Kaiser that has a positive ground. I would like to know how many cars have positive grounds and what years they used this theory.
