Is the hydraulic oil turning black? If so using that much oil and you do not see it tells me the rear main is leaking into the trans. woody

I like woody said.. sounds like the rear main leaking... If you split the tractor also check the rear Cam plug.. they have been known to leak too... Usually use some thing like JB weld around that plug to make sure it is not leaking... 16 quarts??? sure sounds like they are going to show up some where... good luck...

The gasket between the oil pan and the rear main seal housing maybe leaking. This will also show up in the trans oil. At 16 QT a day the trans mission oil will be way overfull. If this is the case I would pull the oil pan first and check that gasket before splitting.

If the tractor is a powershift like Twopop mentioned and that much oil was leaking from the rear main seal or pan gasket or cam plug the oil would be in the clutch housing which is a dry compartment on a powershift, I sure would think all this oil would be causing the (DRY) torsional damper disk to slip? It also should have oil dripping or leaking out the weep hole in the bottom of the clutch housing department. Twopop if you have not already found this weep hole ( usually has a cotter pin in it) pull it out and stick a wire up in far enough to make sure that grease and grim is not sealing it off. If 16 quart of oil runs out then I would agree with the first earlier suggestions. If high and dry tie a tin can on the crank case breather pipe and send him back to the field and see how much oil you get in a few hours run. I have seen on early 4430's with some wear and above normal blow by push out a cup full of oil in 15 to 20 minutes. This can be remedied without overhauling the tractor just replace the valve cover with the later one with the better baffle like used on the 4440. Let us know what you learn. Good Luck Dave Wickman
