My cousin doesn't have access to the net, so I'm asking for him. He has a 1020 diesel that up until using a baler the PTO worked fine. After baling about 200 bales, the PTO wont engage unless the tractor is shut down. He says the clutch seems to be OK. Any adjustments that can be made or things to check? Sounds like a clutch problem to me, but I don't have the experience of you guys. Thanks for any ideas.

Nathan's friend---I think the 1020 is the same as the 3 cylinder 820. It has a little lever down on left side of transmission if this lever flops back and forth with out in resistance, the little pin has came out of linkage and dropped down in case,if this is the case by all means find the little pin it will make havoc of transmission. To replace pin not to bad of job, lift rockshaft housing and look down on side of transsmission, little tight but it can be replaced. Good luck Gman

Assuming he's got a two-stage clutch, it sounds like the clutch pedal linkage needs to be adjusted. Under the left footrest, you'll see the linkage from the clutch pedal to the clutch. There should be a clevice that is threaded onto the clutch rod with the other end pinned to the clutch pedal. You want to make the linkage shorter.

Remove the pin and turn the clevice down the threads a couple of turns, then reinsert the pin.

BTW, if the clutch is getting hot, you should be able to smell it.

HTH...let us know how it turns out.

where the rod mentioned pinned to the pedal it's not actually the pedal but a piece of sheet metal bolted to the pedal through a slot. this enables the operator to eliminate the "second" clutch disengaement. sometimes if this bolt is not tightened enogh the pedal will move within the slot and you will loose part of the pedal travel and p.t.o. will not disengage completely: loosen the bolt (3/4" wrench)and move the rod so that the bolt is at the rear end of the slot.
