Inherited two old A's...

I just found out I'm the proud inherit'er (?) of two old JD a's. One's an unstyled '36 and the other is a styled '40. Both are stuck with poor rubber and the jealous brother-in-law has taken some parts off already. I was gonna move 'em this weekend, shoot some pb-blaster in the spark plug holes and fill the crankcase with diesel. I've never done an old two cylinder, and was wondering if there's something else I should do. I'm just finishing up an old Case in the garage, so these will be my next project. If I can get 'em restored I'm betting my wife will even be proud of me, as these were her dads...

Sounds like a lot of work and money for nothing.
Maybe that's the reason he didn't restore them,
he knew they were not worth it.The best you can do is loose money.

Open the compression release valves on the bottom of the block and see if the cylinders are full of water. Mine were. I don't know what pb-blaster is, but it's hard to compress water.

PB-Blaster is an aerosol penetrant. Works pretty well.

Good luck on the As.

On the models mentioned the compresson release is on the side of the block, just above the frame.

Baggsy,

You have inherited two fine pieces. It sounds to me (though I am no expert) that you are on the right track. My only advice to you is to keep your #*&%##& brother-in-law away from your tractors!
