I am looking to buy either an A or B to use on my small horse farm (20 Acres) the tractor will be used mostly for mowing, hay baling, etc. Any reccomendations? What is the difference in horsepower between the A and B. I have seen several sell recently at auctions in the $1500 to $2000 range is that a fairly good price?

I live on a rather large farm for the area I'm at and its equipped with a JD 50, A, and a Ford 4600 w/loader. There's also been a B AND a 60. For light farming there isn't that huge of a difference between the A and B. I love the A... Once you get used to it there is no real difference between it and a tractor with power steering. The only downfall is that it doesn't have live power. Since there is not that much difference in price, and they are high, (Thanks a lot too all of the collectors out there with no real use for the tractors other than parades) you'll be paying a lot for what the tractor will actually be used for. If you want a hint, get a 50 or 60 with hydraulics. The 50 does as much as the A we own does... All good tractors, popping along whether raking, baling, or mowing.

I'm a collector and have placed tractors in the hands of several enthusiasts, with response to remarks by other post, if it weren't for some of us collectors these tractors would be in scrap as most of the farmers have abused and neglected them to that point. I've saved about 8 tractors that now have happy homes.

the later posts are correct, a 50/60 would be better but even better is a 520/620 as they have more power. Since you're using this as a working tractor you'd be better satisfied. Live power and power steering is a must in my book. After you've used the later model tractors you want go back. However in fairness the old A's and B's are tough tractor. The only problem is that parts cost the same for them as the later models.

I think the A would be the better tractor for
runing a hay baler. The early model B only had
18 HP and the A had 29 HP. $1500 is not a bad price if the tractor is in good shape. I mow with
a 1941 hand start B and its the best tractor I
ever had

Hey,
I think you should look into a 50 or a 60 JD because for about the same money you can get alot of options that will be useful if you are going to mow or bale hay. A 50 JD is about 30 h.p and a 60 runs about 40 pto h.p. . Another plus is you can find one with live PTO and live hyd. which is a real plus when using them. They also are slightly more fuel efficient than the A or B because of duplex carburation. If i was going to bale and mow i would look into these. You probly can get a 60 JD for $1500 to $2000 and it be a good one.
good luck

Chuck's post is right on the money! For about the same money, a 50 or 60 will make you a handier
tractor. I've seen 50's and 60's go pretty cheap.
