My manual is confusing. What oil goes where in the engine, crankcase, and first reduction gear?

Crankcase and engine is the same. Fill with a premium quality 10W30,10W40 or 20W50 in hot weather. SJ and/or Ch-4 rating 1st reduction cover fills with splash from the transmission. Has a drain plug to use at trans oil change time. Everybody has changed the trans oil in the past couple of years or right after we bought the tractor ?

The same oil goes in the crankcase and the first gear reduction case. The engine and crankcase are the same thing on four cycle engines unless you have a dry sump system. I use 10w30.
