I have found a '52 B I would like to buy. Tractor is complete with very good sheetmetal. One cylinder has very low compression; won't run. He is asking $500; is that reasonable?? Also, tractor has a loader frame mounted, which I can take or leave behind, but no loader. Is there any value in taking the frame?? If you can't tell, this is my first John Deere; I don't want to make a big mistake. Thanks for your help!

I would buy it if thats what you want. A valve job will probly take care of the low compression.

Even as raw material, $500 is a great deal. Just plan on having another $2000 into it before you are done. Anything less - chalk up to being lucky.

I would take the frame if the guy didn't want it. You will be making contacts while you are getting the B to run and might find someone with a use for it (or use it for welding practice).

Mike,$500.00 is not bad,if the tractor is complete, and has good rubber. Not running can be anything from a rusty set of points to the compression problem. You can pay twice that for one that runs and still have low compression.Rings for a "B" run under $50.00 from John Deere. The loader I'd take, you should be able to buy a bucket cheap,or the cyl's make good log splitting cyl's.WARNING:John Deere's are like Lays potatoe chips, you can't have just one,Dan
