I am looking at a 4020 that has a steering wheel that just spins like a toy tractor. I think that the end of the spline gear is worn. The wheel even pulls out the owner says. Is this a big job to fix.ie expense & time.

I had problems with one of my brothers tractors. I went to a junk yard and bought the whole assembly for about $100, Much easier than rebuilding.

Treeman, Sounds like that the pin retaining the splined coupling on the steering shaft has failed. Not that big of a deal but the bad part is that to fix it you will have to remove and disassemble the steering valve unit. Have someone that is famillier with this unit or you will have a bigger mess when you get back toghether.Close does not count on these control valves they have to be set correctly or they will not steer. Good Luck!! Dave W.

Like Dave said.. have someone set it that has done a few.. or tons on setting the steering valve..... and hehe.. don't put your fingers on the inside of the steering wheel the first time you start the tractor and turn the wheel.. If set wrong.. it will turn on its own.. as fast as it can until it hits the stops... Been there... Good luck...
