i've got a 4020 jd. my powershift trans quit 2through8th. it shifts into all reverse gears and first forward. the linkage is good. i'm hoping it's something simple. anybody got some idea?

the loss of 1,2,4and 7 means the c3 clutch pack has failed,but the loss of 2 to 8 indicates either major problems or control valve problems.the trans pump could be bad or the torsional damper could be slipping.pressure tests need to be done to determine where the problem is.if you require a john deere shop to repair it it could cost nearly $10000.00 to repair the entire unit

Sounds as though you are going to split the Tractor and replace some Clutch packs and Brake packs. Check 3rd gear at somewhere around 1400 rpm. press in on the inching peddle, some call it a clutch, and see if the tractor picks up ground speed. If it does you have either a brake pack or a clutch pack bad.
