I had to replace a beveled fan shaft gear in a 1937 JD A unstyled. After replacement reassemblied the governor to the fan shaft and it was noisy. Was told that because the gears (fan shaft gear and governor gear) were not cut as a pair that was the reason for the noise. Well the gears chewed each other up and now I must replace the fan shaft gear and the governor gear. What did I do wrong? Can you get just a governor gear or do I need to purchase the whole governor and what about getting a cut pair of gears (fan shaft and governor)?

I agree with the other guys. They're right as usual. I too have btdt. One thing I've found helpful when using used gears or non matched gears is to remove the flared end of the fanshaf gear's teeth. As they wear they get a bit of a flare on the trailing edge of the teeth & that flare makes heeling them difficult at least for me. If I remove the flare I have a lot easier time setting them.

Buckeye al, thats a very good point. That could have been his original problem. Those little non- worn ends of the teeth will grind to metal shavings in no time if they are meshed to a different gear. It sure would pay to take a die grinder & chamfer the flair off.

Marvin, I did the exact same thing and mine was also noisy. Yes, to do it correct, you need to replace both bevel gears (a matched set) new or at least get a good used governor gear and the fan shaft gear that was on the same tractor. You adjust the gears mesh by adding or removing extra gaskets (gasket kit has diff thickness gaskets)both on the fan shaft and governors end cap. Now, I put some of that oil treatment in my crankcase that makes oil cling to gears etc. and mine by use has really quieted down from what it was at first. Thsoe gears are a press fit on the governor shaft and changing them isnt for a rookie. Good Luck Ol John T in Indiana

Marv, I have used mismatched gears as you did without any problem, they will be noisy for quite a while though. It sounds like you didn't match the heels up or they were too tight or the gears were just too mismatched ( one really worn & the other not)or they wern't getting oil or the governor bearings or fan bearings were worn & loose or you installed the wrong gear. You should try to replace those gears in pairs if you can, then get a service manual & follow the book procedure to install them.
