First of all, a big thanks to everyone on this page, especially John T. About 1 year ago I started this B project, my first, I knew nothing. Now I'm in the process of starting and getting it to run. I pulled it last night, first it started spewing gas out the exhaust pipe. Why would it do that?? After drying off the plugs, we made another attempt. To my surprize, it started and ran for about 1 minute, when I tried to idle down and push the choke in, it died. It did start several times, but will not idle. The idle and load needles are open about 1 1/4 turns. I know I need new plugs, they say to use autolite instead of champion. Does anyone know what size of autolite for a 45 B??(or other good brands) I would really appriciate any tips on getting this thing to run, as you can see, I'm really green at this. Good day....

AS, if you had to have the choke on to keep it runnning it isn't flooding due to a needle & seat. Did you pull it very far with the choke on (if you did that could explain the fuel spitting out the exhaust pipe. It is easy to over choke while spinning the engine fast. First get it running, then run it any way you can for a while. If after it runs for a while it still blows gas out of the exhaust or won't idle down post back with what it is doing & we will talk you through the repair. It wouldn't hurt to check the ignition timing to see if it is running real late.

Check what the other gentlemen said, and use a 386 or 388 autolite plug gapped at .030

Hey AS glad to hear youre progressing. I agree with Jim there, its probably full of gas because the carbs needle valve/seat is not closing allowing gas to flood over and fill the cylinders. You need to check the oil because it may be overfilled with raw gas. You can buy a carb kit with a new needle and seat from Roberts Carb repairs. Another possibility is the float has a small hole and leaks causing it to go to the bottom of carb bowl and never close the needle valve off. When you remove it, shake it and see if it has fuel inside it, this assumes its a brass, not a cork float. As far as not idling, you need to fix the float and/or needle first then if it stil needs choke to run, thats a classic sign of the idle pasages in the carb being clogged or the idle jet set too lean. I think the Autolite plug number is 386. Check the needle/seat and float (we still shut gas off when not in use) and post back. Ol John T in Indiana

Howdy AS Check Clooney's posts on carburater repairs. They have been most helpful to me. I have found that 3 times a charm on these carbs! It sounds like a bad float and or needle valve seat. Check oil and be sure crankcase isn't full of gas! Good luck -JIM
