At the risk of sounding ignorant, I have a question about a common Deere term. What does it mean when a tractor is said to have "cutoffs"? I know it has to do with the rims of spoked tractors, but what exactly are cutoffs? Thanks.

hey,
i was reading the posts and they both dont sound super clear, so let me clear it up once and for all. If you bought, well lets say for example, a new 1937 "B" JD. Your dealer would ask if you wanted steel wheels or rubber. The rubber tires came on rims made by a manufacturer called F&H. These rims would have round spokes with what looks like a small nut or large washer welded in between the spokes and the rims. If you requested steel wheels, the rear would have flat spokes with a metal band welded around these so you could bolt the lugs to them. The front rims are where many people get confused. A TRACTOR BOUGHT ON STEEL WILL ALSO HAVE RIMS WITH ROUND SPOKES ON THE FRONT, HOWEVER, THESE ARE NOT THE EXPENSIVE "ROUND SOKED RIMS", BUT RATHER CUTDOWNS!!! Like I mentioned before, a true "round spoke rim" will have nuts welded to the rim and spokes. This also applies to the front wheels! I have a tractor on cutdowns and it also has cutdowns on the front, which if you know what to look for you can tell they are only steel cutdowns and not the PRIZED "round spoke rims". Now, After you had bought this tractor (getting back to the story above), you decide you are tired of steel and want rubber tires on your tractor. You would take the wheels off, go to the local tire store and he would (gasp) cut off the steel band (for mounting the lugs) and weld a regular tire type rim to the spokes. Thus creating what collectors call "cutdowns".

Hope this cleared up some things for someone,

Agen, to elaborate on what Gman said. A cut-off is a spoked steel wheel that has had the steel rim "cut-off" and a rubber tire rim installed. I have seen both flat spoke & round spoke cut-offs.

AGEN there is no such thing as a dumb question---Tractors that came out with steel tires,is referred to as on steel and like wise the term on rubber is used, those steel cleats make for a bumpy ride and slow as a snail, what people do the modify the steel tire and mount it on a rim and put rubber tires on it. Flat spoke is the only ones I've seen modified, the round spoke came from the factory with a rubber tire
