My 720 started leaking bad on the flywheel side of the motor (oil running out of flywheel cover when running). We pulled it apart and found a fiber "thrust washer" mangled. Got to be the problem right? Ordered one from Deere, put it in, put flywheel back on, set endplay to about .010" and went back to work. About 10 hours later, the oil leak came back. Before I tear back into it and find the washer mangled again, I was hoping someone else has fought this and won. Is there something I am missing? Is this washer that hard to get in right? Is there something else in there that seals the oil in?

Thanks for the help,
Jonathan

Jonathan, where did that mangled thrust washer come from? Was it between the flywheel & the flywheel spacer? Or was it inside the crankcase between the crankshaft & the main bearing housing? You didn't mention if you had the main bearing housing off. If it was on the outside of the main bearing housing it doesn't belong there. There is a cork type ring inside the flywheel spacer that seals the spacer to the crankshaft, if it is dried out, worn, missing or loose the oil will leak out behind the flywheel. There should be a little pin sticking out of the back of the flywheel hub that engages into a slot in the spacer if it is broken or missing the spacer will spin & tear up that cork & cause a leak. There is also a gasket to seal the bearing cover to the main bearing housing that can leak... If you go into a little more detail on where that thrust washer came from & how much you took apart to put it in I can be of more help. You might try running it with the flywheel cover off to see exactly where the oil is comming from.

OK, I add some details this time. Bad for a fellow to ask for help and not tell folks where.

I'll start at the cover. Removed cover, removed flywheel, removed outer bearing cover, removed flywheel spacer. There was a fiber washer on the crank outside of the main bearing cover. It was broken and mangled. My service manual shows this washer should be there. It also shows one on the other side of the main bearing. Since this one was broken, I went no farther. Put new washer in, put spacer back on, a little silicone on bearing cover and put it back on centering it over the spacer, put flywheel back on and lined up drive pin in spacer, set end play to .010", and tightend flywheel to 275 ft/lbs, jam nut, and cover. Did not leak for a few hours, but leak came back.

I have not tore back into it. Maybe one night this week I can. I suppose the oil may be coming from the spacer. Is it really necessary to go to Deere for the seal in the spacer or can a flat O-ring be used or some other gasket material? Isnt it's sole purpose to seal the spacer to the crank so no oil slips out between the spacer and the crank? I hate silicone, but in this case would it help or cause problems?

I didnt pull the main bearing the first go round because the oil appears to be leaking under or around the spacer and I didnt think there was anything on the other side of the main to stop the oil. No need to go deeper than needed.

Thanks for the help,
Jonathan

Jonathan, your right about that thrust washer between the spacer & main bearing. It sounds like you probably need the seal in the spacer. I don't think an "O" ring will work as that seal is pretty thick & wide compared to an "O" ring. Silicone will only last for a while & you take a chance of getting it into the bearing. That seal is only a couple of dollars. I never take a spacer off without replacing that seal because they usually leak after being disturbed. When you have the flywheel off grab the crank & lift it up & see how much vertical play it has, if you are getting main bearing wear it is real hard to control all the oil that gets by the bearing & will probably leak some no mater what you do.

Clooney,

I am not trying to cheap out. I just didnt want to have to do it again next week. Deere had some problem when I looked for the washer. They did not show the seal in the spacer as being a separate item. It was show with the $80 spacer. That maybe the only way to get it.

The main bearing is tight. The tractor had been sitting for awhile. This isnt the only oil leak that showed up after we started using it.

Thanks for the info
Jonathan

Jonathan, I "think" that is the same seal that is used on a 70 gas (A 4224R), if it is I show it still in stock & cost $2.22. If it isn't the same number post the number & I will check stock for you. I don't have a 720 parts book.

This may be deep enough now knowone looks anymore. The part number is correct. Deere ordered it for me. I will pick it up tomorrow and hopefully stop this oil leak untill rebuild time.

John, is this a diesel or gas?

Mr. Clooney, the tractor is an All-Fuel. I suppose that does have some effect as to the design.
