I have recently come across a John Deere 226 Corn Picker. I am going to try to restore it, but I don't have an owners manual. If anyone knows anything about the 226 or has an owners manual that they wouldn't mind parting with, please email me. Also, if anyone knows what tractor(s) this corn picker is supposed to be mounted on please let me know. Thanks

Steve

I presently work at Deere and am working on a project with the guy who helped develop the 227 picker and subsequent picker and snappers. He's 73 and still does some engineering work for us. If you need help with these old things let me know and I will ask him. He sure has a lot of stories to share.

20 years ago I could have supplied you with the mounts. All I seen were mounted on two cylinder tractors. The 226 is a very heavy picker, and I would suggest at least a mid or late 40's A. We used ours on a 44 JD A, and broke a couple axles while it was in use.( Try changing out an axle in the middle of a field in single digit temps. No fun!) Also the picker was designed that the front would not raise very high, and the front wheels could not be turned very much. Was real happy when we got the first 227! Good luck on your restoration! Be careful! Don

I am thinking about this seriously. I don't know if restoring one is a good idea. These old pickers are the number one reason why so many old farmers are missing parts of hands and arms. Balers were a distant second when it came to maiming people.

If I remember this right, it is a two-row tractor-mounted picker. We had one of these when I was a kid at home. They are pretty reliable and durable, Dad ran it for several years on quite a bit of corn. We mounted it on a 1949 JD B although it would work better on an A or 50 (520, 530). It would also fit other brands of tractor although mounting brackets would be really scarce now.

Most of them were sold for scrap when combines got popular in the late 60's.

A manual should be available from a JD dealer.
