Starting a 3010/24v

Question1- Can you charge one battery at a time on a trickle charger on a 3010?
Question2- Is it safe to pull start it? I have a couple times in 8th gear.

Sure, as Dave indicated, you can always charge a 12 volt battery with a 12 volt charger, it doesnt know theres another 12 volter there on the other side in series with it and it doesnt matter, as long as your charger is across the + and - of the one battery. Dave, I gave two electrical presentations at Expo X, and although it wasnt a part of the lecture, of course I still got a 24 volt question. I simply drew a diagram to explain the simple series theory, but a 24 volt lecture may be somethign to consider in the future for sure. Ol John T in Indiana

John, Can't help but think that some time spent on the 24 volt topic would draw allot of interest and questions. I have heard allot good things on the talks you have given at the different events. It is the kind of subject one can't appreciate unless you are involved in one of these systems and believe me it becomes pretty interesting especially when it is explained in a way that the average person can understand it and benefit from the information shared. Justin, Answer to your first question is yes, Keep red to positive and black to negative. The answer to your second question is yes, There is no hydraulic clutches to slip on the Waterloo 10 or 20 series tractors. You also can jump start one or both batteries at a time just keep the polarity between the battery you are jumping the same to the vehicle that you are jumping it with. The best way and right way when jumping with a 12 volt jumper to a 24 volt tractor is to hook your 12 volt jumper direct to one battery at a time and keep the poles the same. You can jump both batteries at the same time but it will require two 12 volt jumpers (one for each battery) or one 24 volt jumper and hook to the front of each battery (front meaning cables going to starter) again keep you poles the same. There is an exception to this rule and I will explain but if you don't understand it, don't do it because you will always be safe doing it the way as described above. On early original 3010 and 4010 24 volt diesel tractors instead of using a crossover cable between the two 12 volt batteries and the ground wire for the 12 volt circuits, they used individual battery ground straps eliminating the need for the ground wire. A tractor with these individual ground straps you could jump from the frame and to the front of one battery with a 12 volt jumper, but be careful because one battery is positive ground and the other is negative ground. To jump the left battery in this case you would put the positive jumper to the frame and the negative to the front (- post) of the left battery. To jump the right battery you would put the negative jumper to the frame and the positive jumper to the front (+ post) of the right battery. Most all these old early tractor were changed over to the cross over cable and ground wire like the later 24 volt models. The reason being the ground wire would act as a fuse for the 12 volt circuit in the event of shorting. If your tractor is equipped with a ground wire and cross over cable jump direct off the batteries and NOT the frame. Hope I haven't confused you. Good Luck!! Dave Wickman
