I have what I think is a planter lid that is marked Deere & Mansur Company, Moline, Ill. with picture of a deer. On back is two patent dates, 1893 being the last. Can anyone tell me if this is the forerunner of the John Deere Company or what? Thanks for your assistance.

By the way, the item looks yellow in the picture, but it is actually a rusty color. It is yellow because I had to lighten it on my computer to get the detail to show up and in the process it turned yellow. Using a magnifying glass, tiny remnants of old red paint can be seen, especially at mounting bolt holes.

I have a pair of planter lids identical to yours. If you ever figure out the original color, let me know. I have visions of mounting them on a couple of round white oak boards. I think Deere joined with Mansur briefly and later parted ways.

Thanks Mel and Stew. My lids have all of the paint gone from the outside. I've noticed a red tint on the inside, but always wondered if it was residue from the insecticide that they put on the seed.

I saw an article that the colors of Deere & Mansur were green, yellow and red, but I don't know the application to this cover. I have one too.

Just to add to the Deere Mansur controversy, I just found an open end wrench in an old toolbox. It is cast, with 3/4 and 15/16 inch ends. It has the DEERE MANSUR CO. name molded in the cast. Thanks.
