I bought several quarts of JD Classic Green paint (TY6564) for an old B. Under the directions on the can, it warns against using laquer thinner or other "non-John Deere" thinners. Of course, when I bought the paint I didn't read the can first and, hence, didn't buy the JD thinner (in fact, I don't even think the dealer carries the thinner). Who out there has used this JD paint and did you use non-JD thinner and what were the results? What can be successfully used? I noticed that the paint contains mineral spirits - can this be used OK? Does anyone know what kind of paint this is? Any general suggestions for getting good results? I sure would hate to go to all the work of restoring this thing and then screw it up at the end because I used the wrong thinner!!! Thanks

John, I have had very good luck using a good quality acrylic enamel reducer ( get the temperature range you are going to paint in). I usually use "Dupont" 50-70* I also use hardener for (synthetic) enamel. Let the paint "flash" (dry) for a little while between coats, then put on the second, third coats. I thin the paint 10 ounces of paint to 1&1/2 ounces of thinner & an ounce of hardener. Sometimes for the first coat I will thin to 10 ounces of paint to 3 ounces of thinner & set the gun pressure up 5-10 lbs above normal so the paint will be real thin & I can blow it into the crevices & corners of all the castings (note: thinned to this viscosity it runs real easy & won't dry to as good a shine so I only use it for the first coat & keep it thin & let it flash for at least 1/2 hour.

I always use the JD thinner,It's for enamel
paint.I also use hardner, and fish eye eliminator.
Used to get a product that had them all combined,
but i think the EPA made them quit making it.
