Just acquired a 1952 JD-MT. Manuals state use SAE10w (summer)& SAE20W (winter) for engine and SAE10w for touch-o-matic. Can not find either of these locally. What can be substituted? JD dealer not very helpful regarding this matter.

Lee, I believe the manual ment to say 20w summer & 10w winter. Because of the age & wear on your MT I would use 30w summer & 20w winter & if you don't work it hard 10w40 all year round. For the touch-o-matic use 10w or 20w or hy-guard but don't mix them. The new oils are much superior to the oils that were available when your manual was written so the worst oil available now is much, much better than the oil recomended for your MT. Also there is a steel washer that goes under your oil filter (make sure it is still there) a lot of those washers got thrown out with the oil filter when they were changed. (if it is missing it will cause low oil pressure.

Clooney, is that steel washer info applicable to the JD-H as well? My oil pressure runs on the low side. Tell me more.

Mike, that washer is used only on the M, 40 ,420 & 430 series J.D.'s. If the bearings arn't worn & there arn't any broken oil lines inside the crankcase & the oil pump isn't worn out & the oil is the proper viscosity you can adjust the oil pressure by removing the pipe plug on the right side of the crankcase just below the clutch pulley & then turn the screw in to increase the oil pressure. ( note: don't adjust while engine is running) If the oil pressure is still low you might have a distorted oil filter body (common on 2 cyl. J.D.'s that have had the oil filter cover over tightened at one time or another) To see if the filter body is leaking you will have to pull the top crankcase cover & drain some of the oil then hand crank the engine & look at the area between the filter body & filter head. You didn't say how low the oil pressure is, it should be 10-15 psi at high idle. (use a KNOWN good gage to test)

Hey Clooney, My 48 G has that washer under the filter while my 46 G does not. Both pin the gauge to the right at idle for oil pressure, except for when the coupler to the oil pump broke on the 46. I spoiled an engine 15 years ago so now I watch gauges real close or would been doing another engine. Mike
