I've restored several tractors and have been in transmission of many models however am trying to diagnose a sound for a friends tractor. I sold him a 350 JD mower and it works fine mounted on the 620 but at slower rpm there is a distinct clunking. I get it somewhat on my 520 and dismissed it as backlash in the PTO shaft and or drive gears. Has anyone had similar experiences. I don't think there is any gear damage as noise doesn't exist under power up. I also thought it might be worn collars to the powershaft. Any imput appreciated.

Check your pto shaft and joints, they must be in line and not worn- or they will make the described noise. And it will sound like it is in the transmission.

I got the same thing on my 530 when hooked up to a No. 39N JD sickle mower. It worked fine with a No. 5 mower. If you find out what this is, I'd like to know too!
