Was the 435 the only JD of that era to use a Detroit Diesel engine?
Thanks
John

The 8010 did too. - The large 4 wheel drive ahead of it's time.

The 440 industrial and it's agricultural cousin the 435 were equiped with a misorable detuned "S" 2-53 series engine. If rebuilding use the "N" pistons & "N" injectors. The 100 8010's of 1959 era of which 99 were converted to 8020's had a 6-71 inline Detroit. They needed the "N" upgrade as well.

G Taylor: You say the 435 engine was miserable and de-tuned. I have no experience with one, but I have looked at the I&T manual. It must have been a nightmare to rebuild. Would you please elaborate.

The "s" series 2-53 had only 17 to 1 compression & low presure injectors that sprayed rather than atomized fuel. The relatively large combustion chamber wall area to combustion chamber size cause the little bit of heat from only 17 to 1 compression to be absorbed by the metal before it lit the fuel oil if temperatures were below 50F The 21 to 1 "N" pistons and "N" injectors will start at 32F without block heat, hardly any smoke at idle, burn cleaner, burn less fuel per horse power, smoke less. The engine used by Deere didn't need to spray cool the pistom bottoms with the weeny 35ml injectors. If you go to the 45 or max factory size naturaly aspirated 50ml "N" injectors the pistons may get hot enough to score the cylinder walls. If you go up in injector size do not ballast the tractor over 4500 with driver and use Amsoil 85W140 series 2000 gear lube. You will find the pinion gears in the bottom of the transmission case if you don't. In fact never ballast a 435,420 or 430 over 4500 lbs to prolong ring & pinion life.
