I am in the process of putting my 38 JD D back together & can't remember how the felt seals & seal retainers go back in the ft governor housing (rear of fan shaft). There are two felts & two retainers & I know the front one goes in with the retainer closed end to the front but can't remember if the rear retainer goes in with the closed end to the front or rear. Help!!!!

Place the felts in then the reatiners in to hold the felts in place. Both the felts will be placed in the housings in the outer most directions. These will hold in the oil and grease if you have a grease zert on the front housing behind the fan.

The felts & retainers I am talking about are in the housing on the front of the governor (the rear of the fan shaft. i know the felts go inside the retainers & the retainers go in next to each other & the front retainer goes in with the closed end forward I just don't know which direction the rear most (second) retainer faces. does the open end face forward or rearward?
