Just bought a 62' 3010 gas and would like any information, comments, advice, or warnings about what to watch out for. Additionally, I'm wondering what type of gas to use. The tractor was obviously built during a time when leaded gas was available. Is there an additive that works best?

The tractor will be used for mowing (9+ acres) and moving rocks and perhaps haying.

I also have a chance to buy a 148 loader. How difficult is it to transport and attach? Will it fit in a pick-up truck? How about two?

Again, any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Buy the loader: it's incredibly useful.

A couple of words on the loader: If you plan on using it to move hay bales, get a bale spear and do NOT use the bucket to move round bales. There are far too many people that have been injured or killed when a bale came backwards out of the bucket.

Also remember that a loader changes the balance of a tractor and puts a lot of stress on the front spindles. I've learned about taking it slow and easy with a load.

As far as lead additives go, just replace the valve seats with hardened seats if a valve job is ever required.

My two cents worth.

Way to go ,I also have a 3010 among my collection of older girls. A 3010 is a very up to date tractor even though it may be almost 30 years old, it features closed center hydraulics, breakaway couplers, hydrostatic steering, full power brakes, an excellent syncromesh transmission ... I have a # 48 loader on my tractor and find it extremely well fitted to the tractor. The # 148 is a newer improved version and will no doubt prove an asset. It would be a great idea for you to visit your local John Deere dealer and purchase the appropriate parts and service manuals. I have done extensive work to all areas of my tractor and as with most Deere product almost all parts are still available (new) and many used parts are available from tractor wreckers.I was at a course last summer and met a gentleman from Texas whose Father in law still farms with a 3010. They just keep on ticking..... .. All the best with your new toy. Mine will get lots of use this summer as I am just completing building a sawmill and will use the 3010 with a fork attachment to handle logs. I am Christian school teacher and and have 2 weeks to go till summer vacation. Have a good and safe summer .

I have a 3010 and find it to be great for a 1207 haybine and and my 276 NH bailer. Did have to put a clutch in mine and repair a leak at the PTO shaft. Does seem to drink gas, but since I don't make a living with it that's not so bad. I've been using unleaded in mine with no problem so far. Have been told if you don't put the tractor in a hard pull for long periods (like for plowing) unleaded is okay. May take awhile though before the effects of that will be seen. I'm also using unleaded in my B and 530 as well. Good luck with your tractor.

I believe you have made an excellant choice for a tractor even tho i have not been around a 3010 gas i have used both lpg and diesel models.i think it will serve you well.the 3010 is equipped with both 1000 rpm and 540 rpm pto shafts and to change from one to the other you remove 4 bolts and change the splined shaft.this is very easy when switching from 540 to 1000,however when switching the other way you must insure that the center pin [that is in the center of the shaft that is in the tractor]can be pushed in by hand, because if it is forced in it will break the shifting pin inside the tractor, and the tractor will have to be split in order to repair it.

I have a '62 3010, its a real gas hog, but a good worker. I never have used any lead additive or anything, has 3500 hours on it and it runs just fine. The Hyd pump on mine does leak though. I mow about 5 acres with mine, and do some plowing/disking, and i have a back hoe for it. My grandpa bought it in '85, the only thing i know thats gone out on it is the fuel pump. Its a good tractor. Enjoy
