Could some one take a look at this photo of the shifters in my 51 B John Deere tranny and tell me if I need to replace the first, third, & reverse shifter (second one from top in photo). It is quite a bit different from the one shown in the parts book and service manual. It was made in two pieces and has two pawls. My parts book and service manual shows a one piece shifter with only one pawl. Parts book states only three pawls are required for this transmission. As can be seen from the photo, there are four being used. I know the underdrive shifter is broken and will have to be replaced.

John, your 1-3-R sure looks like the later locking shifter offered as a retro-fit The picture doesn't have quite enough resolution to be sure though. If the center piece is spring loaded & moves [it will move at arrow 2] you have the later [locking] shifter. I don't have a 50 parts manual handy but you might look in the 50 parts manual, I believe your shifter looks a lot like the [late] 50 [locking] shifter.
~It looks like you might have other problems though.. It appears that there is a broken casting piece jammed to the lower right of the hi/lo shifter [arrow 1].. I cant be sure but it probably either broke off of the hi/lo shifter or the bottom of the shift cover..
~Anyways, right now your trans isnt in neutral, you need to line ALL the shifter pockets up to put the trans in neutral [make sure they all have the detents snap in when lined up] before re-assembly..

Many thanks Clooney. Yes, the high/lo shifter is broken. I bought this old B to learn more about them. Looks like I'm going to have to learn more than I counted on. I'll have more questions later. John-in-Ga
